No one needs fixing: a better starting point for communication skills coaching

There’s a common assumption behind a lot of poor communication advice: that something about you is the problem.

You’re too quiet.
Too indirect.
Too hesitant in certain situations.
Therefore, the focus becomes fixing it.
But that’s not a particularly useful way to think about communication.
You’re not the problem
Most communication habits develop for a reason.
If you hesitate to speak up, there’s usually a context where that made sense.
If you over-explain, it’s often because clarity mattered at some point.
If you avoid difficult conversations, it may have helped you maintain stability or relationships.
These aren’t random flaws. They’re learned patterns.
And at one stage, they were effective.
When patterns stop working
The issue tends to be context.
What worked in one environment doesn’t always work in another.
You might now be in a role where:
You need to speak up in meetings
You need to be more direct
You need to handle challenge or disagreement more comfortably.
The gap isn’t about who you are. It’s about what the situation now requires.
This isn’t about ‘fixing’
Communication coaching isn’t about replacing your personality.
It’s about expanding what you can do.
That means:
understanding your default patterns
recognising when they’re useful and when they’re not
building alternative ways of responding
choosing deliberately, rather than reacting automatically
You don’t lose your natural style. You gain range.
A more useful approach
If something in your communication isn’t working for you, the question isn’t:
‘What’s wrong with me?’
It’s rather:
‘What would be more effective here?’
That shift makes the coaching more practical, and far more productive.
Because refining your communication skills isn’t about fixing who you are.
It’s about giving you more choice.
If you want to improve your communication skills at work in a more structured way, work with an experienced communication coach can help you build clarity and confidence in real situations.
