Is communication coaching structured, or is every session different?

‘Will I be following a proven programme, or will each session simply focus on whatever comes up that week?’
I get asked a variation of this sort of question fairly often with new or potential clients - it’s a fair question, and in fact an important one to ask before starting coaching.
You want confidence that there’s a clear process behind the work.; but you also don’t want to feel like you’re being put through a generic course that ignores your specific challenges, goals and experiences.
Effective communication coaching is a bit of a combination.
There is a structured framework to guide the journey, but the focus within that framework is always shaped around the individual. The process provides direction; the sessions focus on what will make the biggest difference for you.
The best communication coaching, in my opinion, is not about following a coaching template, or a rigid formula, or simply having a series of open-ended, amorphous questions to get through; those methods are for elsewhere. For me, coaching is bespoke, combining proven principles with a personalised approach that recognises that every person is unique and brings different experiences, strengths and challenges.
A solid framework gives you the confidence that you’re building the right skills in the right order. A flexible approach ensures that the coaching remains relevant, practical and focused on the situations that matter most to you.
Ultimately, the goal is not to change who you are or make you communicate like someone else. It’s to help you become a more confident, clear, consistent, and effective version of yourself - equipped with the skills and self-awareness to communicate at your best, when it matters most.
About me: with a background in professional acting, behavioural science and around 25 years experience in business leadership, I specialise in helping others communicate with more confidence, presence and influence.
I have coached senior executives, industry leaders and public figures on presentations, media appearances, high-stakes interviews and international negotiations.
I work with a select number of professionals each year, helping them develop greater communication skills in the moments that matter to them most.
I am trusted as an executive communication coach by several leaders at companies such as Abbott, BBC Studios and the NHS.
